Yellowstone

By Alec Addicott

A steaming splash jets forth from the earth
And steam wisps through the frigid winter air
Bison nuzzle their young, protecting them
From the bitter cold

Snowflakes, no two alike, spiral to the ground
Pine trees, as straight as hairs on a terrified man’s neck,
Puncture the cavernous sky
A kingfisher’s call echoes through the dusk

A waterfall breaks the silence
Powerful armies of water crash into a lake, then a river
All the while, under the ground,
Hell burns in an unearthly glow
